This work is part of Andy Warhol's celebrated exploration of Marilyn Monroe as a subject — one of the most iconic bodies of work in post-war American art. Executed following Monroe's death in 1962, Warhol's Marilyn imagery transforms a photograph taken for the 1953 film Niagara into a series of flat, silkscreened icons that simultaneously celebrate and question the nature of celebrity, beauty, and mass reproduction. The flattened forms and bold colour fields strip away photographic texture, revealing the constructed, almost abstract quality of the celebrity image. Warhol's Marilyn works span paintings, screenprints, and unique works on paper, each varying in palette and emphasis while maintaining the core structure of the appropriated photograph. They have become among the most recognizable artworks of the twentieth century and command significant prices at auction globally.
