About this work

Nathan Paddison's "Tyrone Rr Sore Ass" exemplifies the artist's visceral approach to figuration, where the human form emerges through aggressive material accumulation and gestural urgency. The work presents a figure rendered in Paddison's characteristic lexicon of oil stick, matte vinyl acrylic spray paint, charcoal, and pencil, each medium contributing distinct textural and tonal registers that collide across the canvas surface. Bold strokes of oil stick carve out bodily mass while spray paint halos and atmospheric washes create spatial ambiguity, pushing the figure between presence and dissolution. The title itself carries Paddison's irreverent humor and directness, grounding the work in something distinctly human and unguarded. This refusal of preciousness extends to the execution, where marks appear both deliberate and spontaneous, building a portrait that feels excavated rather than constructed. Charcoal lines provide skeletal structure while pencil work adds moments of delicacy against the more aggressive paint handling, creating a push-pull dynamic that animates the composition. Emotionally, the piece operates in a register of raw vulnerability mixed with defiant energy. There is discomfort here, suggested by the title and reinforced through the work's agitated surface, yet also a celebratory embrace of that discomfort. This tension sits at the core of Paddison's practice, which consistently interrogates how bodies carry experience, strain, and identity through painterly means. Within Paddison's broader output, this canvas-based work demonstrates his ability to translate the immediacy often associated with works on paper into larger, more physically commanding formats without sacrificing gestural authenticity. This work would be a significant acquisition for collectors drawn to contemporary expressionism that balances formal rigor with uncompromising emotional directness.

About Nathan Paddison

Nathan Paddison is an Australian artist based on the North Coast of Australia, working primarily in acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, and oil stick. He is entirely self-taught, having discovered painting during a difficult period earlier in his life, an experience that became the foundation of his practice and continues to inform the urgency and rawness of his work today.

Paddison's paintings are gestural and immediate, built with bold color, dynamic brushwork, and a flat, almost storybook rendering of figures such as wide eyed cats, toothy dinosaurs, and playing card royalty. His style draws on Art Brut and street art traditions, with clear affinities to Basquiat, Picasso, and Twombly, though his voice remains distinctly his own. Text often appears scattered across his surfaces, sometimes playful, sometimes fragmented, adding another layer to compositions that favor instinct and physical energy over careful planning.

He approaches each canvas with a sense of urgency, working across mixed media to avoid the limits of any single material. His subjects, whether drawn from childhood imagery or personal memory, are consistently distorted in a way meant to reveal character rather than surface appearance.

Paddison has exhibited across Australia, Europe, and Asia, and received the Kilgour Prize People's Choice Award from Newcastle Art Gallery in 2021.
