Hear Two Breake or The Rules, 2022
Oil stick matte vinyl acrylic spray paint charcoal and pencil on canvas
204 x 216 cm
Edition of 25 + 5 APs
Nathan Paddison's "Hear Two Breake or The Rules" presents a visceral collision of figuration and abstraction, where the human form emerges and dissolves within layers of gestural energy. The composition pulses with an urgency that feels simultaneously spontaneous and deliberate, characteristic of Paddison's ability to balance raw expressionism with compositional rigor. Figures, suggested rather than defined, appear caught in moments of transformation—their contours bleeding into surrounding fields of color and mark-making that refuse to settle into passive background. The work operates in that charged territory between recognition and dissolution, inviting viewers to piece together narrative fragments while accepting that wholeness remains perpetually out of reach. The emotional register here is one of restless seeking, perhaps even tender rupture. The title itself suggests a breaking of conventions, a refusal to adhere to prescribed boundaries between abstraction and representation, between chaos and control. There is vulnerability in how Paddison allows forms to remain incomplete, trusting the viewer to meet the work in its openness. Printed on archival cold press cotton rag, the giclée process preserves the textural immediacy of the original gesture while the substantial 310 gsm weight lends the piece a physical presence that rewards prolonged looking. Within Paddison's broader practice, this work exemplifies his ongoing interrogation of the figure as both subject and vehicle for emotional excavation—a site where psychological interiority manifests through paint's material possibilities. "Hear Two Breake or The Rules" represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a work that captures contemporary expressionism at its most searching and alive.

Nathan Paddison is an Australian artist based on the North Coast of Australia, working primarily in acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, and oil stick. He is entirely self-taught, having discovered painting during a difficult period earlier in his life, an experience that became the foundation of his practice and continues to inform the urgency and rawness of his work today.
Paddison's paintings are gestural and immediate, built with bold color, dynamic brushwork, and a flat, almost storybook rendering of figures such as wide eyed cats, toothy dinosaurs, and playing card royalty. His style draws on Art Brut and street art traditions, with clear affinities to Basquiat, Picasso, and Twombly, though his voice remains distinctly his own. Text often appears scattered across his surfaces, sometimes playful, sometimes fragmented, adding another layer to compositions that favor instinct and physical energy over careful planning.
He approaches each canvas with a sense of urgency, working across mixed media to avoid the limits of any single material. His subjects, whether drawn from childhood imagery or personal memory, are consistently distorted in a way meant to reveal character rather than surface appearance.
Paddison has exhibited across Australia, Europe, and Asia, and received the Kilgour Prize People's Choice Award from Newcastle Art Gallery in 2021.
