Duck and Cover, 2019
Mixed Media
Edition
Edition of 50
In a humorous nod to the classic 1970s interior decoration trend of the three flying ducks, Banksy created a set of three small-scale models of unmanned drones designed to be mounted on a wall. Arranged in a duck-like formation, these models give a playful twist to the ominous presence of military drones, but their underlying menace remains palpable. This clever double entendre echoes throughout the Gross Domestic Product shop itself. Positioned as a critique of brands profiting from his art, the shop also highlights the irony of Banksy commercializing his own work. When Gross Domestic Product opened in 2019, it adopted an unconventional lottery system instead of a standard retail setup, allowing a broader audience to access Banksy’s art. With prices starting as low as £10, the shop was intended to democratize ownership of Banksy’s work, offering affordable “homewares” for those who could not otherwise buy his prints or encounter his murals in public spaces.
