Richard Pettibone stands as a pivotal American artist, known for his role in shaping both Pop Art and its successor, post-Pop Art. His contributions acted as a forerunner to the Appropriation Art movement of the 1980s, delivering a clever and often playful critique of art from the 20th century. Pettibone is renowned for his unique approach of crafting miniature versions of works by other celebrated artists, including Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and Roy Lichtenstein. These choices are particularly meaningful, as the artists he emulates are themselves associated with themes of duplication and serial production, thereby infusing Pettibone’s work with an extra dimension of irony. Born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1938, he completed his Master of Fine Arts at the Otis Art Institute in 1962. His career has been highlighted by significant showcases, such as a comprehensive retrospective at the Laguna Art Museum in California from 2005–2006, which displayed over 200 of his pieces, and his participation in the 2007 "What Is Painting?" exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Pettibone's art has been featured in numerous prestigious venues, including the Institute for Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, and again at the Laguna Art Museum. Currently, he resides and continues his artistic practice in New York, NY.
