About this work

Terry Urban has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary figurative painting, building a devoted following through his evocative portrayals of solitary moments and urban intimacy. His work occupies a distinctive space between street art sensibilities and classical painterly technique, a synthesis that has garnered serious attention from collectors seeking emotionally resonant narrative work rooted in technical discipline. *The Smoke Break* exemplifies Urban's ability to transform quotidian scenes into meditations on stillness and introspection. Executed in his characteristic mixed-media approach combining acrylic, oil, charcoal, and aerosol on canvas, the work demonstrates the textural complexity that distinguishes Urban's practice. The interplay of these materials creates a visual tension—areas of refined brushwork alongside raw, gestural marks—that mirrors the psychological duality often present in his subjects: figures caught between action and pause, presence and absence. At 48 x 60 inches, this canvas commands substantial physical presence while maintaining the intimate atmosphere central to Urban's vision. The title itself signals the artist's ongoing interest in liminal moments, those brief intervals of solitude carved out from the demands of daily existence. Urban's figures rarely confront the viewer directly; instead, they exist within their own contemplative space, inviting observation without performance. Urban's primary market continues to strengthen as his work gains institutional recognition and critical engagement. Pieces from this period represent an artist working at the height of his technical and conceptual powers, making them particularly compelling for collectors building holdings in contemporary figuration. About Terry Urban

Terry Urban was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to San Diego after high school to pursue skateboarding, where he was first introduced to turntablism. He returned to Cleveland to work as a DJ, later landing a role at Sirius Satellite Radio, before relocating to New York City in 2006 to focus on music full time. He built a career producing mixtapes, including Viva la Hova, Southerngold, and Biggie Stardust, earning recognition from artists including Jay-Z, Coldplay, and Drake.

In 2015, after more than a decade in the music industry, Urban returned to painting, treating it as a new creative outlet and eventually a full-time practice. His work is bold and gestural, combining vibrant color with symbolic, often somber imagery, including skulls, bones, and fragmented figures that speak to mortality, resilience, and inner conflict. Despite the weight of his subject matter, his paintings carry an underlying sense of energy and momentum, shaped by the same restless drive that carried him through skateboarding and music.

Urban brings a disciplined, almost ritualistic approach to his studio practice, working extended painting sessions often set against music or film. His path from street culture to music to visual art has become part of his artistic identity, and his work resonates as a document of reinvention as much as a body of paintings.
