About this work

Terry Urban has emerged as a compelling voice in contemporary figurative painting, distinguished by his ability to merge classical techniques with the raw energy of street art. His work occupies a unique position at the intersection of fine art tradition and urban visual culture, drawing collectors who appreciate technical proficiency alongside conceptual depth. Urban's paintings have garnered increasing attention in both primary and secondary markets, reflecting a growing recognition of his contribution to the contemporary narrative painting movement. "Souls of the Underpass" exemplifies Urban's mature style, employing his characteristic layering of acrylic, oil, charcoal, and aerosol to create surfaces that possess both immediacy and contemplative weight. The mixed-media approach allows Urban to achieve textural complexity—aerosol providing atmospheric washes while oil and charcoal deliver precise, emotive figuration. At 48 by 60 inches, the work commands presence while maintaining an intimacy that draws viewers into its psychological terrain. The title suggests Urban's ongoing exploration of liminal spaces and marginalized subjects, themes that have defined much of his recent output. His figures often inhabit transitional zones—physically and metaphorically—rendered with an unflinching honesty that avoids sentimentality. This work represents Urban's continued evolution as a painter unafraid to synthesize disparate influences into a cohesive visual language. The canvas demonstrates his facility with multiple media and his commitment to subject matter that challenges comfortable narratives. Guy Hepner is pleased to offer this significant example of Urban's practice to discerning collectors. For acquisition inquiries, please contact Guy Hepner directly.

About Terry Urban

Terry Urban was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to San Diego after high school to pursue skateboarding, where he was first introduced to turntablism. He returned to Cleveland to work as a DJ, later landing a role at Sirius Satellite Radio, before relocating to New York City in 2006 to focus on music full time. He built a career producing mixtapes, including Viva la Hova, Southerngold, and Biggie Stardust, earning recognition from artists including Jay-Z, Coldplay, and Drake.

In 2015, after more than a decade in the music industry, Urban returned to painting, treating it as a new creative outlet and eventually a full-time practice. His work is bold and gestural, combining vibrant color with symbolic, often somber imagery, including skulls, bones, and fragmented figures that speak to mortality, resilience, and inner conflict. Despite the weight of his subject matter, his paintings carry an underlying sense of energy and momentum, shaped by the same restless drive that carried him through skateboarding and music.

Urban brings a disciplined, almost ritualistic approach to his studio practice, working extended painting sessions often set against music or film. His path from street culture to music to visual art has become part of his artistic identity, and his work resonates as a document of reinvention as much as a body of paintings.
