About this work

Terry Urban has established himself as a compelling voice in contemporary street art, bridging the raw energy of urban environments with the refined context of fine art practice. His work sits at the intersection of graffiti culture, pop sensibility, and painterly tradition, earning recognition from collectors who value artists capable of translating subcultural authenticity into gallery-worthy compositions. *Home Sweet Home* exemplifies Urban's distinctive approach to mixed media, layering acrylic, oil, charcoal, and aerosol on canvas to create a textural depth that rewards extended viewing. The combination of these materials—each carrying its own history and connotation—generates a visual dialogue between control and spontaneity, permanence and transience. At 48 x 60 inches, the work commands significant presence while maintaining an intimacy appropriate for residential collection. This 2026 piece demonstrates Urban's continued evolution, synthesizing his street art foundations with increasingly sophisticated compositional strategies. The title itself suggests a meditation on domesticity and belonging, themes that resonate throughout his broader practice. Urban's ability to imbue familiar subjects with unexpected emotional weight has distinguished his output from peers working in similar territory. Collectors have responded to Urban's trajectory with growing interest, recognizing both the conceptual rigor and accessible visual language that characterize his paintings. His work appeals to those building collections that reflect contemporary urban experience without sacrificing technical accomplishment or art historical awareness. Guy Hepner is pleased to offer this significant work from Terry Urban's recent production and welcomes inquiries from collectors interested in acquisition.

About Terry Urban

Terry Urban was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to San Diego after high school to pursue skateboarding, where he was first introduced to turntablism. He returned to Cleveland to work as a DJ, later landing a role at Sirius Satellite Radio, before relocating to New York City in 2006 to focus on music full time. He built a career producing mixtapes, including Viva la Hova, Southerngold, and Biggie Stardust, earning recognition from artists including Jay-Z, Coldplay, and Drake.

In 2015, after more than a decade in the music industry, Urban returned to painting, treating it as a new creative outlet and eventually a full-time practice. His work is bold and gestural, combining vibrant color with symbolic, often somber imagery, including skulls, bones, and fragmented figures that speak to mortality, resilience, and inner conflict. Despite the weight of his subject matter, his paintings carry an underlying sense of energy and momentum, shaped by the same restless drive that carried him through skateboarding and music.

Urban brings a disciplined, almost ritualistic approach to his studio practice, working extended painting sessions often set against music or film. His path from street culture to music to visual art has become part of his artistic identity, and his work resonates as a document of reinvention as much as a body of paintings.
