About this work

Terry Urban's "After Forever" presents a commanding visual experience through its masterful layering of mixed media on canvas. The work demonstrates Urban's signature approach to material synthesis, combining acrylic, oil, pastel, and aerosol to create textural depth that shifts between controlled precision and expressive spontaneity. The 48 x 36 inch composition draws the viewer into a dynamic interplay of surface and gesture, where deliberate mark-making meets atmospheric washes of color that seem to breathe and pulse across the picture plane. The title itself suggests a meditation on temporality and what exists beyond conventional boundaries of time—a theme that resonates through the work's visual language. There is something simultaneously elegiac and hopeful in the piece, as if capturing a moment suspended between ending and beginning. Urban achieves an emotional register that feels both intimate and expansive, inviting prolonged contemplation rather than offering immediate resolution. Within Urban's broader practice, "After Forever" exemplifies his ongoing exploration of materiality as meaning. His willingness to move fluidly between street-influenced aerosol techniques and the more traditional vocabularies of oil and pastel creates works that resist easy categorization. This hybrid approach reflects contemporary art's dissolution of hierarchies between high and low, permanent and ephemeral. The result is a painting that feels urgently present while maintaining connections to art historical traditions of abstraction and gestural expression. Urban continues to develop a distinctive visual vocabulary that speaks to our current moment's complexities while remaining grounded in painterly concerns that have animated artists for generations. About Terry Urban

Terry Urban was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to San Diego after high school to pursue skateboarding, where he was first introduced to turntablism. He returned to Cleveland to work as a DJ, later landing a role at Sirius Satellite Radio, before relocating to New York City in 2006 to focus on music full time. He built a career producing mixtapes, including Viva la Hova, Southerngold, and Biggie Stardust, earning recognition from artists including Jay-Z, Coldplay, and Drake.

In 2015, after more than a decade in the music industry, Urban returned to painting, treating it as a new creative outlet and eventually a full-time practice. His work is bold and gestural, combining vibrant color with symbolic, often somber imagery, including skulls, bones, and fragmented figures that speak to mortality, resilience, and inner conflict. Despite the weight of his subject matter, his paintings carry an underlying sense of energy and momentum, shaped by the same restless drive that carried him through skateboarding and music.

Urban brings a disciplined, almost ritualistic approach to his studio practice, working extended painting sessions often set against music or film. His path from street culture to music to visual art has become part of his artistic identity, and his work resonates as a document of reinvention as much as a body of paintings.
