About the Series

Donald Sultan's Poppies series represents his most sustained and formally powerful engagement with botanical subject matter. The poppy — historically associated with sleep, death, and remembrance — becomes in Sultan's hands a monumental presence: bold, graphic forms rendered in lush blacks, reds, blues, and greens against stark backgrounds.

The series spans decades and encompasses works on paper, silkscreens, and paintings, each exploring the flower's seductive symmetry and symbolic weight. Working with his characteristic tar-inflected palette and the material weight of his industrial process, Sultan transforms a familiar subject into something simultaneously decorative and ominous, beautiful and weighted with mortality.

Available in multiple configurations — single poppies, double poppies, four poppies, and portfolio sets — the series offers collectors entry at a range of price points while maintaining consistent secondary market support.
