About the Series

Other Flowers gathers Donald Sultan's botanical prints and works that sit outside his best-known Poppies, Lantern Flowers, and Lemons series — a collection of individually distinct subjects including freesias, mimosas, and tulips, alongside a small number of related still-life motifs from across his print catalogue.

Sultan, born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1951, built his career on large-scale still life imagery rendered through unconventional industrial materials — tar, enamel, spackle, and vinyl tile applied to Masonite rather than canvas, then gouged, sanded, and buffed to build flatness, depth, and texture. That same visual language of bold, high-contrast silhouettes set against fields of colour carries through into the varied prints gathered in this series, from the Three Freesias suite in blue, red, and yellow to individual Mimosa compositions and White Tulips and Vase.

Because Other Flowers spans several distinct subjects rather than a single unified body of work, it is best understood as a survey of botanical imagery adjacent to Sultan's primary flower series — offering collectors access to less common motifs within his decades-long exploration of still life and industrial material, alongside the poppies and lantern flowers for which he is best known.
