Five Facts About Ian Davenport Paintings
Ian Davenport was born in Sidcup, England, and studied at Northwich College of Art and Design before graduating from Goldsmiths College in 1988.
In 1988, Davenport exhibited in Freeze, the student-organized exhibition staged by Damien Hirst that introduced the group of artists who became known as the Young British Artists (YBAs).
Davenport is known for pouring household paint using hypodermic syringes onto angled surfaces, allowing the paint to run in controlled vertical lines that pool and puddle at the bottom of each work.
Paintings in this series, including Splatter: Vibrance (2018) and Dark Blue Flare (2022), demonstrate Davenport's continued exploration of color relationships through this signature pouring technique.
Davenport has described his practice as one where "the how to paint became the what to paint," emphasizing the action and process of painting as his central subject matter.
