Ian Davenport's Ovals series represents a pivotal exploration of colour, geometry, and abstraction within contemporary art. Each work in this collection demonstrates the artist's masterful command of translucent glazes and layered pigments, creating dynamic compositions where overlapping ovals interact across the canvas. The series showcases Davenport's signature technique of systematic colour application, from bold blacks and deep crimsons to luminous yellows and vibrant turquoises.
Created during a period of significant evolution in Davenport's practice, the Ovals works exemplify his commitment to investigating colour theory and optical perception. The interplay between warm and cool tones generates visual tension and depth, inviting viewers to experience colour as a primary subject rather than mere decoration. This series has become increasingly sought-after among collectors, reflecting growing recognition of Davenport's contribution to contemporary abstraction.

Five Facts About Ian Davenport Ovals
Ovals is a 2002 series of six screenprints by Ian Davenport, each depicting a simple oval form rendered in a three-colour combination, such as Oval: black, light blue, black and Oval: yellow, lemon yellow, yellow.
The Ovals series developed out of Davenport's 'Arch Paintings,' which were inspired by the arched shape of the Rotherhithe Tunnel in London, a route he travelled to reach his East London studio.
Each screenprint in the Ovals series was published in an edition of 45 plus artist's proofs, printed on Somerset Satin tub-sized paper.
The individual prints in the Ovals series measure approximately 76 x 71 cm (roughly 30 x 28 inches).
The series was first shown as part of an exhibition and accompanying catalogue titled 'Ian Davenport: Ovals Arches Lines.'
