Market Performance

Harland Miller's Penguin Book Cover Editions are among the most actively traded British prints on the secondary market. Works have achieved consistent results at Christie's, Phillips, Bonhams, and Sotheby's, with prices ranging from £8,000 to over £80,000 for major editions in excellent condition. High On Hope (Edition of 35, The Paragon Press) has sold at Bonhams in the £15,000–25,000 range. Hate's Outta Date has achieved £12,000–£30,000 at multiple sales. Death What's In It For Me? consistently achieves £18,000–£45,000 depending on edition number and condition. If The Phone Don't Ring It's Me — one of his earliest Penguin editions — has exceeded £40,000 at auction. Monumental unique paintings in the Penguin format have achieved seven figures.

About the Series

The Penguin Book Cover Editions are the works that established Harland Miller's international reputation. Taking the iconic Penguin paperback design — the orange and white livery, the serifed Gill Sans typography, the publisher colophon — he replaces the fictional title with a phrase of his own devising. The result is something that looks like a book you have definitely read, or wish you hadn't, or wish you could have written.

Titles such as Death What's In It For Me?, If The Phone Don't Ring It's Me, High On Hope, Blonde But Not Forgotten, Hate's Outta Date, Gateshead Revisited, and On Me Not In Me carry the weight of a novel in six words. They are simultaneously funny and sad, operating on registers that purely visual art rarely reaches. The format holds them at precisely the right distance: intimate enough to feel personal, formal enough to feel like found objects.

Most editions are produced with The Paragon Press in London, in runs of 25 to 75, printed as silkscreens on Somerset paper. The works are typically available in multiple colourways. Earlier and more tightly limited editions command the highest prices.
