Vincent Chung — Childhood Series For Sale

Vincent Chung's Childhood Series channels the artist's earliest memories into a body of mixed-media paintings built from sewn textiles, raw pigment and, in many pieces, embedded neon light. Born and raised in New York City and now based in Phoenix, Arizona, Chung traces this work directly back to his upbringing as the child of immigrant parents from Malaysia: his father a furniture maker, his mother a seamstress who took him with her to the garment factory floor after school, where he changed threads and loaded machines. He later inherited her sewing machine, and the act of stitching canvas, fabric and found textiles together has become his central method of storytelling, encoding hours — sometimes weeks — of labour into each surface.

Works such as Making Trouble, Sweet Little Nightmare and Pulling Like The Tide draw their evocative titles from fragments of memory and feeling rather than literal narrative, inviting viewers to locate their own associations within Chung's imagery. The paintings combine unconventional materials — dirt, cooking oil, spray paint, thread — with more traditional media, deliberately leaving frayed edges, exposed seams and hanging threads visible rather than smoothing them away. This embrace of imperfection reflects Chung's broader interest in confronting the preciousness typically associated with fine art painting.

Trained originally in architecture before pursuing a parallel path in design, Chung brings a considered sense of scale and proportion to compositions that otherwise feel spontaneous and intuitive, often made while working directly on the ground. The Childhood Series stands as one of the clearest expressions of his ongoing exploration of memory, labour and inherited craft.
