Keith Haring: Fertility Suite

The Complete Set of Five Silkscreens

About This Collection

Created in 1983 at the height of Keith Haring's meteoric rise, the Fertility Suite stands among the artist's most exuberant and instantly recognizable bodies of printed work. The suite comprises five silkscreens executed in blazing fluorescent Day-Glo colors — hot pink, electric orange, acid green, and vivid yellow — a palette borrowed from the club flyers, graffiti, and street energy of downtown New York that shaped Haring's visual language.

Across the five compositions, pregnant female figures dance, leap, and radiate with Haring's signature energy lines, celebrating birth, vitality, and the continuity of life. Hovering flying saucers beam rays down upon the figures, an early recurring motif in Haring's iconography that casts creation itself as something cosmic and electric. The imagery draws directly from the vocabulary Haring developed in his subway drawings — the radiant child, the dancing figure, the barking dog's kinetic cousin — distilled here into pure, joyful movement.

The Fertility Suite also carries a deeper resonance. Haring conceived the series in part as a response to the growing awareness of the AIDS crisis and its impact on his community, making these images of fertility and new life both a celebration and a defiant affirmation in the face of loss. Few works capture so completely the dual nature of Haring's art: accessible, playful, and immediate on the surface, yet charged with social meaning beneath.

Executed just a year after his breakout solo exhibition at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, the Fertility Suite represents Haring at his most confident and chromatically daring. The prints remain among the most sought-after works from his early career, prized by collectors for their rarity as a complete suite and their unmistakable visual power.
