About this work

Out of all the locations Shields has shot in, perhaps the most impressive is underwater. Shields himself deems it “the most challenging and incredible ways [he has] ever made a photograph.” Shooting his Submerged series hurdled over many obstacles that made attempting such a shoot seem impossible. Shields recalls, “From day one I knew I wanted to make something special, something that would make people stop and think, ‘how did he do this?’” Shields knew in order to capture the vision he had for the shoot, he needed to be able to stay underwater longer than any of the other models, with complete freedom of what to photograph and how to do it. He explains, “I did not want to use oxygen tanks. Instead, I wanted to learn to free dive the whole series – I can now hold my breath for up to 6 minutes underwater. This ability gave me the chance to shoot images in a way that could not have been done with scuba gear and tanks and allowed me to create a unique look.” The drive and persistence it took to execute the series pays off in a major way. Shields is able to capture the models fully immersed in the water, with the intimate perspective from the bottom of the pool. He writes, “From holding my breath, to getting people in thirty pound dresses 20 feet under the water, to finding the right film and camera combination, there were a million stop signs trying to prevent this from happening. But in the end, I was able to make a series I was very proud of.”

About the Submerged Series

Tyler Shields' Submerged is a 2013 underwater photography series that captures its subjects — dressed in flowing gowns of silk and tulle — suspended beneath the surface of the sea, Grand Canyon-area lakes, and even a domestic bathtub. To achieve the images without the visual interference of scuba equipment, Shields taught himself to free dive, training himself to hold his breath underwater for up to six minutes at a time while directing his cast through each shot from below the surface.

The series' cast included actors and models such as Ana Mulvoy-Ten, Sarah Bolger, Holland Roden, Lydia Hearst, Logan Huffman, and Connor Paolo, each photographed drifting weightlessly as light filters down through the water and fabric billows around them in slow motion. The resulting images — including works such as "Echo," "Amphitrite," and "First Love" — trade the sharp, high-contrast staging typical of Shields' land-based work for a softer, more diffuse quality, the water lending the compositions a dreamlike, almost Pre-Raphaelite atmosphere.

Submerged debuted at Imitate Modern gallery in London in October 2013, running through early November of that year, and has since become one of Shields' most technically distinctive bodies of work. The Guy Hepner catalogue of the series comprises fifteen works. By shifting his usual scenes of celebrity and consumer culture into a weightless, silent environment, Shields strips away the props and gestures that typically anchor his photography, leaving only the human form suspended between control and surrender.

About Tyler Shields

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.

Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.

Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
