Tyler Shields: Decadence Series
Decadence is the latest series by photographer Tyler Shields shot in the summer of 2015. Set in the court of Marie Antoinette, Shields stages scenes that reimagine the court in the late 1600s. This series is the first time Shields has predominately shot with a 8×10 camera, using a technique thats over 50 years old.
The use of the 50 year camera enabled Shields to capture the images on the largest, highest quality negative possible. The outcome, is a series of works that almost feel antique, the specific look envisioned by the artist.
Shields vision for this series steams from every girls fascination with royal family living in Versailles during this time. Whether is it the decadent dresses, wigs, the cakes or champagne, life was about abundance and excess.
“After their marriage, Louis XVI entrusted Marie with the task of entertaining the court,” Shields writes. “Decadence is set in Tuileries Palace in 1667 and The Palace of Versailles 1672. I wanted to give my version of an inside look into what I imagine it would be like if you were able to take a photograph of The Court of The Palace of Versailles and Tuileries Palace an intimate look inside one of the most fascinating times in history.”
The series showcases an all star cast adorned with 18th century costume, including Jamie King who plays the fashion icon. The models are donned in several pastels, brocade dresses and accentuating corsets.
The cast in the series also includes Ana Mulvoy-Ten, Holland Roden, Isabelle Fuhrman, Lydia Hearst, Tallulah Willis, Christa B. Allen, Poppy Jamie, Courtney Halverson, Connor Paolo, Emily Alyn Lind, Lili Peper, Shoshana Bush, Spencer Locke, Mani Yarosh, Faith Picozzi, Logan Huffman, Madison Paige, Alex Krosney, Natalie Lind, and Filip Milenkovic.
