Five Facts About KAWS Other Editions
KAWS (Brian Donnelly) began as a graffiti artist in Jersey City before studying illustration in New York, and his print practice grew directly out of the vinyl toy and streetwear culture he built in the 1990s and 2000s.
His debut vinyl figure, the eight-inch 'Companion' produced with Japanese brand Bounty Hunter in 1999, established the X-eyed Mickey Mouse-derived character that recurs across almost all of his subsequent prints and editions.
Many of his prints originate as exhibition or institutional collaborations rather than standalone releases — for example, the screenprint 'Gone' (2019) was published in connection with the National Gallery of Victoria exhibition 'KAWS: Companionship in the Age of Loneliness' and depicts Companion cradling the BFF character in a pose recalling a classical pietà.
The screenprint 'Alone Again' was released as an edition of 100 plus 20 artist's proofs to accompany his 2019 solo exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD).
KAWS credits his acrylic painting practice, from which many of these prints are derived, partly to admiration for artists including Gerhard Richter and Chuck Close, situating his work within a lineage that bridges street art and established contemporary painting.
