Johan Deckmann: Love Everlasting
A practicing psychotherapist and author, Johan Deckmann has used his decades long career as inspiration to remedy our most painful emotional struggles and existential dread. Known for his signature “self help books” in which Deckmann transcribes witty anecdotes onto the covers of 1970’s recycled book covers, his use of one-liners as a form of medicine have made his works internationally recognizable. With years of his own research, the vintage, therapeutic manifestos are steeped in western culture of constant self improvement and our unending comparisons of ourselves to others. Not unlike what you would find in a therapist’s office, Deckmann’s often blunt messages harness the power of language to confront our internal dilemmas.
“My work is a portrait of human failure and self-sabotage, But my underlying motive is to mirror my audience and motivate change. I think my work resonates with people because many people in the western world are raised to believe that they are victims of their surroundings. I show through my works that they are not.”
Deckmann describes his career in psychotherapy not just as inspiration for his work, but a stark reminder of personal responsibility when it comes to mental health. “I meet many people who suffer from a circumstance that they themselves have created but they choose not to take action,” adding “I think it’s tragicomic that underneath our frustration and self-slavery lies this beautiful opportunity.”
His latest series “Love Everlasting”, which releases online with Guy Hepner & Guy Hepner Editions Thursday August 25th, tackles some of our most burning desires, considering loneliness and the lengths we sometimes go to fulfill some of the deepest aspects of the Human Condition. With works like “Nobody” (2022) that read “I Love Nobody Because Nobody Is Beautiful And Never Lets Me Down”, his next oeuvre in his portfolio continues his tradition of combining humor and a demure attitude to hold a mirror up to our insecurities and perceived faults.
