Gregory ThielkerThe Liquid Night For Sale

The Liquid Night is a body of oil-on-linen paintings by Gregory Thielker, presented in a solo exhibition at Guy Hepner opening October 24th. Where Thielker's earlier work explored daylight driving scenes obscured by rain, this series shifts to night — the feeling of driving after hours, when headlights, streetlights, and rain-slicked surfaces replace the clarity of daytime vision.

Thielker builds each composition from photographs taken during real drives, then combines and edits them digitally before translating the image into paint — a process he has described as working in 4 to 6 layers of oil on linen until the image is complete. The paintings hold onto the specific, fleeting distortions created by rain moving across glass: streaks of colour, halos of artificial light, and blurred edges that dissolve solid forms into passages of pure colour and reflection.

In a foreword written for the exhibition, photographer Dave Krugman described the mood Thielker captures: the way headlights sweep over slick pavement, streetlamps flicker through the gloom, and lit windows illuminate the walls of the city, each glimmer in the darkness suggesting an unknown story. Thielker's paintings hold these transient moments still, allowing them to be studied at a scale and pace impossible in the instant of driving itself.

The Liquid Night builds directly on the visual and technical foundation of Thielker's widely exhibited rain-window paintings, extending the artist's long-running investigation of how weather and light reshape our perception of the road into the more theatrical, high-contrast register of night driving.
