Fabio La Fauci: Grey Area
Unwilling to confine himself to a single medium, Fabio La Fauci’s striking abstract portraits utilize a unique method of combining ceramic and polymer clays with oil paints to create his signature figurative pieces. Delicately balancing surreal and minimal aesthetics, his extensive research into his medium resulted in a distinctive style that elicits movement and tension from otherwise rigid materials and a meticulous process.
As La Fauci’s portfolio has developed, his latest pieces “The Grey Area” Series, works hand in hand with our own innate curiosity to answer questions surrounding identity and the way we relate to ourselves through the masks we outwardly present. Asking “What is a portrait, if not a face” – La Fauci dares his viewers to fill in the blanks with their own exegesis in regards to the works, opening them to endless interpretations. Hinting at our own disconnectedness in a world saturated with images; they touch on our curiosity and need for recognition, veiled in an additional level of complexity and frightening disorientation.
“Painting takes on the role of narrating emotions. The historical memory of the portrait lives in a new form, with the shape of the face and the body becoming a universal trigger, an icon, that from here we can start to reflect on the meaning of identity and personality.”
