David Schmitt's paintings are built from mixed media on raw, unprimed acrylic canvas, each work hand-framed in oak — a signature of his practice that treats the finished object, frame included, as a single integrated statement rather than an image bounded by a separate mount.

The Series

The unprimed canvas is an active surface throughout this body of work: its natural weave and tone show through in passages left untouched, sitting alongside areas of dense material accumulation, so the raw ground itself becomes part of the composition rather than something concealed by it. Recurring works include Coexsist, It Will Work Out, Who Follows The Elephant, and Rescued From Drowning, each combining layered mixed-media gesture with the same oak-framing approach at a consistent 81 x 100 cm (32 x 39 in) scale.

Schmitt has described his approach as sitting "somewhere between folk-, pop-, and cave art," drawing on storytelling traditions and an archaic, hand-made aesthetic to explore themes of love, craft, and human connection. The titles across the series — gesturing toward duality, hope, and survival — extend that narrative sensibility into the paintings themselves.
