About this work
Sprout is a sculptural work created by Dan Lam in 2025, realized in foam, acrylic, polymer, and resin as part of her Color Sculptures series. Its dimensions — 9 by 17½ by 9½ inches — emphasize verticality, the form rising upward with an energy that the title makes explicit: to sprout is to emerge, to push through, to grow toward light. This upward impulse gives the work a vitality distinct from Lam's more settled, grounded forms, suggesting something nascent and insistently generative. Lam's sculptural practice is deeply engaged with ideas of organic growth, and Sprout channels this engagement into a form that makes growth its central metaphor and formal logic. The characteristic polymers and resin drips of the Color Sculptures series take on additional associations here — they read as the tendrils and secretions of a germinating plant, of something pushing through substrate toward air and light. The work's vertical emphasis is reinforced by its elongated silhouette, which rises and perhaps bifurcates toward its upper reaches, giving the impression of a living form in the act of reaching. The saturated acrylics lend the surface an almost bioluminescent quality in this botanical context. Dan Lam is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry whose tactile, vibrantly colored sculptures have attracted a global following and earned significant critical recognition. Working with polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and epoxy resin, she has developed a practice that explores the productive tension between the organic and the synthetic, the beautiful and the unsettling. Lam's work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and internationally, and her presence in both gallery and digital contexts has introduced her practice to an enthusiastic and growing audience. Sprout, created in 2025, reflects the continuing vitality of her Color Sculptures body of work.

About Dan Lam
Dan Lam earned a BFA from the University of North Texas in 2010, followed by an MFA from Arizona State University in 2014, where she began developing the sculptural techniques that would come to define her practice.
Lam creates drippy, blob like sculptures using polyurethane foam, resin, and acrylic, often finished with auto body paint that shifts color as viewers move around the piece. Her work sits at the border of attraction and repulsion, taking cues from natural forms found in the body and the ocean while pushing them into something stranger and more excessive. Materials play a defining role in her process, and she often allows their behavior to guide the final shape of a piece rather than working from a fixed plan.
Lam's sculptures have been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, along with shows in Paris and Munich. Her work has also reached a wide audience through social media, where her process videos and finished pieces have drawn broad public attention beyond the traditional gallery world.
