Donna DeMari
International fashion photographer, Donna DeMari – the first woman to shoot Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit issue- began her career in Milan, Italy, at the age of nineteen. Self taught, this American photographer found her passion for fashion photography in New York City before making a more permanent move to Europe.
DeMari began working straight away for such prestigious magazines as Italian Vogue, French Marie Claire, British Elle, British Bride’s, L’Officiel, as well as British, Australian and German Vogue, among many others. She spent over fifteen years, living and working between Milan, Paris and London, traveling the world on location shooting fashion editorial.
DeMari worked with such well known persons as Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Burlington, Jasmine Ghaury, Kate Moss, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum and Arizona Muse.
Returning to the States, she began working for companies such as Neiman Marcus, Anthropologie, Natori and Conde Nast. It was at this time that her work expanded in a new direction with horses, where she brought her fashion aesthetic and intimate style to equine subjects.
Almost ten years ago, Ralph Lauren discovered her equine photography and her images have been decorating the walls of Ralph Lauren stores around the world ever since, from France to Korea. Her photographs have appeared life-sized in the windows of RL’s Madison Avenue Flagship store, as well as the windows of RL’s Beverly Hills and Hampton’s stores.
During this time she published five books of horse photographs with author Laura Chester, including “Eros and Equuus” and “Heartbeat for Horses” by WillowCreek Press. Her sixth published work, Luke and Forrest, My Savior, My Salvation is an award winning, photographic and written retrospective on the lives of her two labrador retrievers, also published by Willowcreek Press.
