Ingrid Bergman by Andy Warhol
Ingrid Bergman by Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol’s stunning images of Academy Award winning actress Ingrid Bergman, were created by Warhol at the request of a Swedish art gallery in the 1980’s. Andy Warhol’s Ingrid Bergman portfolio was printed in 1983 by Rupert Jason Smith in New York and published by Galerie Borjeson, Malmo, Sweden.
After the the success of the Campbell’s Soup series in the early 1960s, Warhol began creating screenprints of movie star portraits including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Elizabeth Taylor. This print is indicative of Warhol’s obsession with all things relating to fame, especially movie stars. His fascination with pop culture spilled over into his creative output, which is evident by his prints of movie stars, Campbell Soup cans and political figures. His art is a visual recording of the culture of his time.
The Ingrid Bergman series is made up of three types of screen prints of the Academy Award winning actress in 1983. The source images used for these portrait pieces include movie still from her role in Casablanca (‘With Hat’), a movie still from the movie The Bell of St. Mary’s (‘The Nun’) and also a publicity photo (‘Herself’).
About the Artist:
Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. Andy Warhol’s works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. Andy Warhol’s Marilyn and Andy Warhol’s Soup Cans are some of the most recognized and collectible of his artworks. From Andy Warhol Paintings to Andy Warhol Prints and unique pieces, the artist’s works are available for sale from Guy Hepner.
More than twenty years after his death, Andy Warhol remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary art and culture. Warhol’s life and work inspires creative thinkers worldwide thanks to his enduring imagery, his artfully cultivated celebrity, and the ongoing research of dedicated scholars. His impact as an artist is far deeper and greater than his one prescient observation that “everyone will be world famous for fifteen minutes.” His omnivorous curiosity resulted in an enormous body of work that spanned every available medium and most importantly contributed to the collapse of boundaries between high and low culture.
