Warhol and Lichtenstein Prints S...

Sep 24th, 2009

Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and other pop artists experienced a resurgence in fortunes in the London round of contemporary print auctions. Warhol, whose market soared between 2004 and 2007 has seen a downward trend over the last 18 months, reflecting the economy in general. But strong results across the board, supported by the work of Lichtenstein showed that there is always a market for quality works. Warhol's Red Diamond Dust Shoes soared to $174,800, one of the highest prices for the fall print season. Likewise, Warhol's Orangutan from the Endangered Species  portfolio, not regarded as Warhol's most desireable image, found multiple interest before selling for $46,000. Strength in depth abounded, illustrated by the successive Mao lots that all sold strongly, despite a number  of condition issues for several of them.  Mao 95 sold for $59,600, close to the figures reach in the pre credit crunch period. For Lichtenstein, the story was much the same, reaching a peak with his iconic image Reverie, which was finally hammered down for $184,400, supported by a small scale work, Crak! which sold for $33,000.
