Spin Painting (Red Blue Green)

PAINTINGS

Damien Hirst paintings are categorised into distinctly unique styles: spots, spins, butterflies and combinations of all three. Spot paintings, Hirst interpretation of how drugs looks under the microscope are normally primary coloured spots applied to white canvas. Hirst has recently expanded his repertoire by producing these works on gold background colours. Spin paintings are circular in shape, an explosion of colour and chaos, all created by gravity, the paint being applied to the canvas from above while it is being rotated by a spinning wheel. Finally, the butterfly painting series are visually similar to stained glass windows, created by arranging iridescent butterfly wings onto a gloss paint background. Each series is equally striking in appearance, comfirming Hirst as one of the most desired painters in contemporary art, despite his totally unconventional approach.
