HELMUT NEWTON

Helmut Newton Biography- Helmut Newton, the champion of erotic photography, loved beautiful women. Especially if they were nude, posing suggestively, being shot by him, in black and white. These were the critera that created his best work.

Born in Berlin, he served as an apprentice to the fashion photographer Yva, before fleeing Nazi Germany for Australia. Fascinated by fashion photography, he moved to London to realise his ambitions, and quickly garnered interest in his work. Commercial contracts and publications followed, especially from French publications such as Elle. Newton's most recognised work was shot during his colour period in Paris in the 1970s, for it was a city that insired him with its historical seediness and suggestions of European grandeur.

Newton finally succumbed to the fantasies of Hollywood in the 1980s and spent his winters (with his photographer wife Alice Springs) at the Chateau Marmont on Sunset Strip. He wiled away summers in Monte Carlo, a place that acted as the backdrop for some of his finest works. It is said that even when being rushed onto the operating table to save his life after what ultimately proved to be a fatal car crash, he was still brandishing his trusted 35mm Minolta.
