DAMIEN HIRST

Damien Hirst Biography - The pioneer and most recognized name from the YBA (Young British Artist) genre, Damien Hirst has grown to become the highest profile and most commercially savvy artist of the millenium. Only Andy Warhol has come close to Damien Hirst's prolific output. Aided by a small army of studio assistants, Damien Hirst has become one of the most recognized names of contemporary art and culture. Damien Hirst's work is often challenging in subject matter and difficult to live with. Hirst's subjects include animal corpses, skulls, flies, maggots and religious iconography. Damien Hirst's work consistently revolves around the intertwined topics of science and religion, questioning the transition of society from a belief in God to a belief in drugs and science. Often controversial, Damien Hirst's most iconic work is "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living", a fourteen foot shark entombed in a glass vitrine filled with formaldehyde. Along with being one of the most commercially astute artists of his generation, Damien Hirst has held single artist auctions of his own work in London. Damien Hirst has also claimed the title of the most expensive living artist after the sale of his diamond encrusted skull, "For The Love of God."
